Daily Prayer for Climate Change, Action & Justice

A daily prayer for climate change and action to use in your bible studies, small groups and prayer groups.

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. - 1 John 5:4

(Written by Dave Herman) God of abundance, we mourn over our greed, willful ignorance, and apathy. We grieve and are tempted to despair, but we know you hear us. Send out more workers into your harvest field! Awake the sleeping church! Empower us with your overcoming love that makes us more than conquerors! Expose the deception of the denialist movement.

Greed has led the powerful to turn a blind eye to the destruction that comes from irresponsibly using the earth’s resources, and to misinform the public in order to continue their exploitation. This pollution leads to health problems. Increased air pollutants alter ecosystems, destroy habitats, and threaten the lives of humans--especially the world’s poorest. We have denied this problem and been far too reluctant to act, and our inaction reaps a more difficult world for the upcoming generations and animal species who will bear the pain of our selfishness.

God, prick our hearts so that we would become sensitized to the pain we’re causing. Stir our consciences awake so that we would recognize that the reality of the climate crisis requires us to act immediately and deliberately to curb this threat. May we see that we have the power of life and death in our hands, of action and inaction.

Move us like never before. Let us take the mantle of responsibility like Jesus did--to daily die to our selfish lives and rise to live-giving power. In doing so, we will speak to the sinful causes, inaction, and willful ignorance regarding climate change and also actively work towards a just and healthy world that values the lives of its inhabitants.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
